What If I Told You Lakshmi Wasn’t What They Were Looking For?

From Mayu’s Journal…

Every painting carries a story. Some stay with us for a lifetime. This is one of mine.

Have you ever noticed how life sometimes surprises us?

We set out searching for one thing…

And somewhere along the way, we discover something far more valuable.

Whenever someone stands before our Gaja Lakshmi Tanjore Painting at ArtsAisle, I like to ask them a simple question.

“Do you know what the Devas were really searching for when Goddess Lakshmi appeared?”

Most people answer without hesitation.

“Lakshmi.”

I smile.

“No.”

They were searching for Amrit—the nectar of immortality.

And somehow…

that’s exactly why I’ve always loved this story.

Because they went looking for one treasure.

Yet the greatest blessing appeared before they ever found it.

Come.

Let me tell you why.

When an Ocean Had to Be Churned

Long ago, the Devas had begun to lose their strength.

Without Amrit, hidden deep within the Kshira Sagara, the great Ocean of Milk, they could never regain what had been lost.

But there was one impossible question.

How do you churn an entire ocean?

The task was far beyond the strength of the Devas alone.

So they did something extraordinary.

They joined hands with the very beings they had always opposed—the Asuras.

For a brief moment, rivalry gave way to purpose.

Together, they lifted Mount Mandara, making it the churning rod.

The mighty serpent king Vasuki became the rope.

Then the impossible began.

The mountain turned.

The serpent stretched.

The ocean roared.

Again…

And again…

And again.

With every turn, something remarkable emerged from the depths.

Celestial treasures.

Sacred beings.

Divine gifts.

Each more extraordinary than the last.

Until suddenly…

Everything seemed to pause.

From the heart of the ocean rose a magnificent lotus.

Standing upon it was Goddess Lakshmi.

Radiant.

Graceful.

Peaceful.

The embodiment of prosperity, abundance, beauty, and auspiciousness.

Whenever I picture that moment, one thought always stays with me.

The Devas were searching for immortality.

Yet prosperity found them first.

Perhaps that’s why this story still feels so relevant today.

How often do we spend our lives chasing one dream…

while another blessing quietly arrives beside us?

The Story Hidden Inside Gaja Lakshmi

The next time you see Gaja Lakshmi, don’t look only at her ornaments.

Pause for a moment.

Look at the entire picture.

Notice the elephants.

The word Gaja simply means elephant.

But in our traditions, elephants have always symbolised dignity, wisdom, abundance, and royal grace.

Then look at the lotus beneath Lakshmi.

It rises from muddy waters untouched, reminding us that beauty and purity can blossom even during life’s most difficult seasons.

And there she sits…

Calm.

Balanced.

Unhurried.

While the elephants gently shower her with sacred water.

Nothing in the image feels rushed.

Nothing competes for attention.

Everything exists in harmony.

Sometimes I wonder if our ancestors understood prosperity very differently from the way we do today.

Prosperity wasn’t measured only by wealth.

It was measured by peace.

By a family eating together.

By having enough to share.

By remembering gratitude before asking for more.

That’s why I believe a Gaja Lakshmi Tanjore Painting is much more than a beautiful work of art.

It quietly reminds us what abundance truly looks like.

When Devotion Became Art

Centuries later, the artisans of Thanjavur found a remarkable way to preserve stories like this.

They didn’t simply paint them.

They honoured them.

Every authentic Tanjore painting begins with patience.

Traditional relief work is built layer by layer.

Each ornament is carefully shaped by hand.

Fine Jaipur stones are individually placed.

Then comes the moment everyone waits for.

The application of genuine 22K gold foil.

Slowly…

The painting begins to change.

It no longer feels like colour on a wooden panel.

It begins to carry presence.

People often ask me,

“Mayu… what makes a handcrafted Tanjore painting feel so different from a printed picture?”

I never answer immediately.

Instead, I tell them…

“Come back in the evening.”

Light a simple brass lamp.

Sit quietly for a few moments.

Then look again.

The gold catches the flickering flame.

The ornaments begin to glow.

The expressions soften.

The entire painting seems almost alive.

No photograph can truly capture that feeling.

You have to experience it.

Perhaps that’s why families have treasured authentic Tanjore paintings for generations.

Not simply as beautiful décor.

But as sacred companions in their daily prayers.

As heirlooms that quietly carry faith, devotion, and family traditions from one generation to the next.

Why Families Welcome Gaja Lakshmi Home

Over the years, I’ve met families at every stage of life.

Some are moving into their very first home.

Some are celebrating a wedding.

Some are welcoming a new baby.

Others simply walk into our gallery because they’re looking for something they can’t quite put into words.

They’ll often tell me,

“We’re looking for a painting of Lakshmi.”

So I ask them,

“What are you hoping she brings into your home?”

The answers are almost never about money.

They say…

“We want our home to feel peaceful.”

“We want our children to grow up with these traditions.”

“We want blessings for a new beginning.”

“We want our family to stay happy and together.”

That’s when I realise they aren’t really searching for a painting.

They’re searching for a feeling.

Perhaps that’s why a Gaja Lakshmi Tanjore Painting has always held such a special place in Indian homes.

Because it quietly represents everything we hope a home will become.

A place filled with harmony.

A place where kindness is abundant.

A place where gratitude is never forgotten.

And a place where every new beginning is welcomed with faith.

More Than a Painting for Your Pooja Room

People sometimes ask me where a Gaja Lakshmi Tanjore Painting should be placed.

My answer is always the same.

“Place her where your family will see her every day.”

For some, that’s the pooja room.

For others, it’s the entrance that welcomes every guest.

Some choose her for the living room, where the family gathers every evening.

Wherever she is placed, her presence becomes part of everyday life.

Children grow up seeing her before they leave for school.

A lamp is lit before her during festivals.

Prayers are whispered in moments of gratitude and moments of uncertainty.

That is why an authentic Tanjore painting for a pooja room becomes so much more than décor.

It quietly becomes part of a family’s story.

A Blessing That Grows with Every Generation

One of my favourite moments at ArtsAisle is watching grandparents choose a painting with their grandchildren beside them.

The child may only see the sparkle of the gold.

The parent notices the craftsmanship.

The grandparent remembers the stories.

Three generations.

One painting.

Years later, that same handcrafted Gaja Lakshmi Tanjore Painting will still be there.

Watching over festivals.

Housewarming celebrations.

Birthdays.

Wedding prayers.

And countless ordinary mornings when someone lights a lamp before beginning the day.

That is the quiet beauty of traditional Tanjore paintings.

They don’t simply decorate a wall.

They become part of a family’s memories.

Perhaps that’s why they’re still among the most cherished housewarming gifts, wedding gifts, and sacred heirlooms passed lovingly from one generation to the next.

Before I Leave You with This Story…

May I ask you one last question?

The Devas churned an entire ocean searching for Amrit.

Along the way…

they discovered Lakshmi.

I’ve often wondered whether that story is really about them.

Or about us.

We spend so much of life believing happiness is waiting somewhere ahead.

The next achievement.

The next promotion.

The next home.

The next possession.

We’re always searching for something more.

But what if prosperity has already arrived?

Perhaps it’s sitting across the dining table with the people we love.

Perhaps it’s the laughter echoing through our home.

Perhaps it’s having enough to share.

Perhaps it’s the quiet comfort of lighting a lamp at dusk.

Or perhaps…

it’s simply the peace we feel when we pause long enough to notice life’s blessings.

Maybe that’s what Goddess Lakshmi has been teaching us all along.

Not that prosperity is something we chase.

But something we learn to recognise.
