A Message from Mayu…
A few months ago, I was invited into a customer’s home.
She had visited our gallery looking for an authentic Tanjore painting, but before choosing one, she wanted me to see her pooja room.
As soon as she opened the door, I smiled. It was a beautiful space. Every idol had been lovingly collected over the years.
There were temple souvenirs from family pilgrimages. Framed photographs of deities. Sacred calendars. Brass lamps. Fresh flowers.Every corner carried a memory.
As she looked around, she quietly asked me,
“Mayu… why doesn’t my pooja room feel peaceful anymore?”
For a moment, I didn’t answer.
Instead, I simply stood there.
Then my eyes wandered to one small brass lamp glowing gently in the corner. And suddenly, I remembered my grandmother.
My Grandmother Never Decorated a Pooja Room
She created a feeling. Every morning before sunrise, she would light a single lamp. The room wasn’t large. There weren’t dozens of idols. There wasn’t expensive décor.
Yet somehow…The moment you stepped inside, you wanted to sit there a little longer.
As a child, I never understood why. Years later, I realised she had quietly taught us something without ever saying it.
A sacred space doesn’t ask for attention. It offers peace.
The Heart of Every Indian Home
Over the years, I’ve visited hundreds of homes while helping families choose authentic Tanjore paintings in Bangalore.
Some homes have an entire room dedicated to prayer. Others have only a small wooden mandir tucked into a quiet corner.
The size has never mattered. The feeling always has.
Because every home has one sacred place where prayers begin, gratitude is expressed, and worries are gently placed at the feet of the Divine. That little corner becomes the heart of the home.
Not because of how much it contains. But because of what it gives back. Peace.
When Devotion Has Too Much to Compete With
I looked back at the customer’s pooja room.
Every idol was beautiful. Every framed picture held meaning. Every keepsake had a story.Nothing there was unnecessary.
Yet together…Everything was competing for attention.
I gently smiled and asked her,
“When you sit down to pray… where do your eyes naturally rest?”
She paused.Then smiled.
“They don’t.” That single answer explained everything.
Sometimes devotion doesn’t need more. Sometimes it simply needs space.
Why One Authentic Tanjore Painting Can Transform a Pooja Room
People often ask me,
“Mayu… why do you recommend a Tanjore painting?”
It isn’t because I curate them. It isn’t even because they’re handcrafted with genuine 22K gold foil, traditional embossing, and fine Jaipur stones.
It’s because they have presence. When a diya is lit before an authentic Tanjore painting for a pooja room, something beautiful happens.
The gold softly catches the flame. The colours become richer.
The expressions seem almost alive. Without asking for attention, the painting gently becomes the centre of your devotion.
That is the quiet beauty of a handcrafted Tanjore painting.
It doesn’t fill the room. It anchors it.
There Is No Perfect Pooja Room
One of the things I love most about visiting different homes is discovering how every family’s faith is beautifully unique.
Some pray before Lord Ganesha every morning.
Others find comfort in Lord Balaji, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Krishna, Murugan, Shiva Parvati, or their cherished Kula Deivam.
Some families have one sacred artwork. Others lovingly preserve heirloom idols passed down through generations.
There is no rule. There is no perfect arrangement.
Only one beautiful question. When you light your lamp…
Does your heart become still? If it does…
Then your pooja room is already exactly as it should be.
The Most Beautiful Pooja Rooms Aren’t the Biggest
I’ve learnt something after walking through so many homes. The pooja rooms I remember most aren’t the grandest.
They aren’t the ones filled with the most expensive idols or elaborate decorations. They’re the ones that quietly invited me to sit down.
To breathe.To pray.To stay a little longer.
That’s what meaningful pooja room décor truly does.
It doesn’t impress visitors. It comforts the family who returns there every single day.
And sometimes…
One thoughtfully chosen Tanjore painting for your pooja room can create that feeling more beautifully than an entire wall filled with objects.
